Role Maps


The fire service’s Integrated Personal Development System has developed role maps, supported by National Occupational Standards, for all roles within the UK fire service.

The roles of fire and rescue service employees are those defined within the Integrated Personal Development System and set out in accredited occupational standards determined by the Emergency Fire Rescue and Safety Vocational Standards Group. The roles used shall be as the fire and rescue authority considers necessary and specific activities within those roles will be determined by the authority to meet the local needs of the service based on risk.

The defined Roles are:

  • Firefighter (Amended February 2010)
  • Firefighter (Control)
  • Crew Manager
  • Crew Manager (Control)
  • Watch Manager
  • Watch Manager (Control)
  • Station Manager
  • Station Manager (Control)
  • Group Manager
  • Group Manager (Control)
  • Area Manager

Roles Maps CONTRACTURAL and are reviewed and updated regurlarly. Any amendements have to be agreed at National Join Council (NJC) level before publication and implementation. The Brigade cannot amend the Role Maps.

The agreed Role Maps were first published and introduced in 2003. Revisions have since been made wih the latest agreed Role Map for FIREFIGHTER agreed and published on 24 February 2010 in NJC Circular 1/10
